Components that store energy electrostatically. Commonly found in single and two phase motors. They are also found in electronics.
Capacitors consist of two plates with an insulating material between them. These plates charge and discharge according to the AC frequency.
Capacitors are useful for providing starting torque for single phase motors. Capacitors are also used for power factor correction.
As capacitors can give someone an electric shock, they must be fitted with a discharge resistor. (ASNZS:3000:2007 – section 4).
