A magnetically controlled switch which uses an inductor to open and close the switch contacts according to the state of the inductor being energized.

Contactors are used to control high current motors and appliances.

The inductor can be energized by an endless array of different inputs.

Thermostats, float switches and pressure switches are some examples of inputs that can control contactors.

Contactors differ from relays because they have bigger contacts and can handle a higher current.
