A dimmer is a device connected to a light fitting designed to increase or decrease the light’s brightness.
A dimmer works by changing the AC electrical waveform which alters the light’s brightness.
Modern dimmers are made of semiconductor material, while older dimmers use variable resistors.
A dimmer which works on a halogen light isn’t suitable for an LED light and vice versa. This means that you might need to change your dimmers when you change your lights to LED.
A dimmer is wired in series with the light. Typically the electrical feed comes in through the switch to the dimmer then out of the dimmer to the light.
