An inductor consists of a wound coil of insulated wire. Inductors are components found in electric motors, contactors, relays, fluorescent lighting and electronics.
One purpose of an inductor is to provide movement via the magnetic field the coil generates.
This movement is how an electric motor or contactor works.
Inductors are also used to smooth voltage changes and ignite fluorescent lighting. Inductors are also used in transformers.
