The insulation resistance test is a mandatory test set out in ASNZS:3000:2007 – section 8.
It stress tests cable insulation at 500V DC to ensure that no two wires are shorting out as a result of insulation damage (unless it is neutral and earth at the MEN link).
Ideal readings are over 500 Megohms although over 1 Mega ohm is allowed according to regulations.
