Stands for Ingress Protection (IP). The standard prepared by IEC technical committee 70 tells us how well protected a device or appliance is from dust and water.
An IP rating contains two numerals ranging from 0 to 6. The first numeral refers to protection against dust (0 = no protection, 6 = dust won’t enter). The second numeral refers to protection agains water (0 = no protection, 6 = high pressure protection from water at different angles).
An example of an IP rating is IP63.
This indicates that the appliance has full dust ingress protection but only moderate water protection so might not be appropriate in wet areas.
IP ratings are very important when doing electrical installations according to AS/NZS:3000
