Similar to a switch, except it is designed to extinguish arcs under load or fault conditions and completely cut off power to a machine or appliance.
The contacts in an isolator are also further apart compared to a switch so therefore safer. Common uses of isolators are oven switches (regulated by ASNZS:3000:2007), MCB’s, motor controllers and many other things.
