    The ‘black’ wire. The neutral provides a return path for the phase.

    The neutral is earthed at the main switchboard and at the transformer. The neutral may also be earthed at other sub-switchboards. This earthing occurs via the MEN Link. The neutral should be 0 volts to earth and 230 volts to phase.

    The neutral terminal is indicated by a ‘N’ letter. The neutral is color coded ‘black’ or ‘blue’ in some cases. (ASNZS:3000:2007 – section 3).

    The main neutral originates from the transformer and is a part of the mains cable.
