    Also known as Duspols (electrician term). A voltmeter is an important safety device to ensure that a circuit is dead before working on it (test before touch).

    It works by determining whether voltage is present. It does this by comparing the voltage between two locations (such as phase and earth or neutral). Voltmeters are rated to be used on specific voltage ranges, if the test voltage is too high, the voltmeter will be damaged.
